Last night I went to Bali.
I awoke in an ornate wooden four poster bed, draped with a lattice of mosquito netting. Rising to slide the craved wooden door inwards, I walked outside and tasted the rich scent of incense on the air. The grass was dewy damp and glistening like a field of perfect little diamonds. A smoky dawn breeze played over my skin; wood fire, mixed with spices, fragrant oils and the homely smells of outdoor cooking.
As my other senses awoke, the early sounds of the tropics reached my ears. Somewhere, high in the trees I heard the chatter of monkeys, competing with an invisible rooster which had started to crow, heralding the new day. The comforting sound of happy people going about their morning added another layer to the sound fabric. As did the rhythmic swish, swish, swish, of a twig broom brushing the damp leaves off a cobbled path.
Suddenly, all I could think of was papaya. The thought of juicy red sweetness thoroughly woke my stomach and had me longing for breakfast…
Then I woke up. Again. But this time I was in my bed, a bit too hot, with no papaya in sight. But I swear as I got up, I could still smell the incense in the air…
