I would like to introduce Rhianna Smith who will be guest blogging on this site, on a regular basis. It’s January again, and for many that means making another long list of resolutions. And after my fair share of New Years’, I have finally come to the conclusion that I’m not really a resolutions kind of girl. I tend to start the year brimming with motivation which tapers off around March, and is all forgotten by my birthday in late April.
So I don’t make resolutions, I make VB. Oh and VB stands for vision boards by the way. For the last 5 years now, I have created a VB in January, and by December when it’s time to pull it all down, I am always blown away by how much has come into reality!
I have a few VB traditions I would like to share with you. These are just tips I have picked up along the way and being slightly superstitious, I have turned into hard and fast rules that seem to work for me. And I figure, anything which can help dreams come true has got to be worth sharing!!
Firstly, make your new VB in January. If, like my very good friend, you discover VB-ing in July, do it in July, and then come January make yourself a new one. This way you give the universe a whole year to bring your dreams to fruition. Oh, and my friend who made hers in July, 98% had come true by December!!!
I like to gather a bunch of magazines from Op Shops and travel agents towards the end of December to get everything ready. On VB-Day (Vision Board Day!!) I get my trusty cork board, pins, scented candles, a yummy cup of licorice and peppermint tea, some awesome music and have myself a beautiful Me-Date. It feels very indulgent and has become something I do especially for me every new year, which I think makes it more powerful.
Depending on my mood, I can make it quite ritualistic; creating and finishing the board on new year’s eve or new year’s day. At other times, I have let it sit until the time felt right. My suggestion here is to have it finished by the end of January so your year has direction and focus. The sooner you get it done, the sooner you have your map laid out for the coming year.
If you are unsure where to start, think of what makes you happy and look for that in words and pictures. Choose images that make you smile, that motivate you, that inspire you, pictures that look like you and the people you love, or look like the person you want to love. I usually go over my 50 cent, second hand mags about 3 times, finding new inspiration and pictures where before I saw none.
After you have all your words, pictures, quotes, photos etc., put them together on your VB and stick them into place. This can be as creative or as plain as you like. The only rule here is that you feel pleasure when you look at your VB. It HAS to make you smile. If it gives you butterflies in your tummy you know you have it right!
I usually keep my VB in my bedroom so I see it every day. Some people meditate on theirs daily, but for me, having it in my room and in my field of vision has worked very well. The more time you spend thinking about and looking at your VB the more likely you are to have those things blossom into your life.
Over the year you will find strange coincidences starting to occur. You might buy a pair of shoes on special one day and find the girl in one of your pictures has the exact pair (my friend had that happen to her in November last year!). You might book a weekend away with your boyfriend without actually seeing the cabin only to find you are staying somewhere that looks remarkably similar to a picture you have (this happened to me 2 years ago!). Your boyfriend might look at your board one day and ask why you have a picture of your bum up there (my dream bum had obviously arrived without me noticing!). It is often in hindsight that you notice these coincidences.
Finally, at the end of every year, I like to transfer all my old pictures from VB to a photo album. Sometimes dreams take longer than a year to arrive, so I like going back over my pictures every year and seeing what new abundance has popped into my life!
Wishing everyone a beautiful, joyful, love-filled, blessed 2012. As Kevin Costner said in the movie Field of Dreams, “If you build it, they will come!!!”. Bring on the VB!!!!!!!!
